Small Business Saturday is around the corner.

Written By: Jennifer Monzón, Marketing & Social Media Volunteer

Montebello Pet Fair is an annual local event that is organized 100% by volunteers and is created for our pet friendly community. This is not possible without the support from the vendors and local small businesses that prepare months in advance to showcase their products and services to all pet families in Montebello, CA and nearby cities.

Now, I’m pretty sure you and almost everyone you know is looking towards shopping those tempting Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals but let me tell you about another holiday that falls in between those two: Small Business Saturday on November 30th. This day is meant to encourage consumers just like you to support and buy from small independent businesses, especially with the holiday season around the corner. A small business can be a new retailer online or offline, a local restaurant, a florist, an event planner, a local craft brewery, a bake shop, a beauty salon, a food truck and so many others fall under this category. So here is a list of a few of our most loyal and supportive small businesses that participate every year at Montebello Pet Fair without fail. We would love if you could support them by giving them a follow, a like and ultimately making a purchase – #ShopSmall. Majority of them started their small business out of passion for their pets, family and community with hopes to making it their full-time job.

Let’s support that drive and hard work, but most importantly let’s support each other.

Open Mic & Checkers at the 9/23 Yappy Hour

Our next Yappy Hour will happen Saturday September 23 from 6pm to 9pm at The Daily Brew Coffee Bar. We have a great event lined up for the night.

openmic atyappyhour (4)

We are opening up our stage to anyone who would like to perform a musical number, spoken word, comedy act, etc. We only ask that your performance be kid friendly and not too loud where it would scare any dogs who would attend the event. We are using the sound system that The Daily Brew has. It’s a basic system with speakers, a small mixing board, and microphones and stands. To sign up, please sign up at this form below.

0331_nws_ocr-l-checkers-07We will also be having checkers games set up for you to play during the evening. September 23 is Checkers Day! Ok, the day isn’t to commemorate the game of checkers, but commemorates a speech that Richard Nixon gave in 1952 where talked about allegations that he was taking election expenses for personal gain. He shared in the speech that he was not taking expenses for personal gain, but he also mentioned a dog that was gifted to his family that was named Checkers. He said his daughter loved the dog and that no matter what people said he would not be giving the dog back. Even though the day isn’t about the game checkers, come on by Yappy Hour at The Daily Brew to play a few games of checkers while you listen to some local artists.

We have about $1,000 left to raise to make the fair a reality. We are working on items to have up for auction at the Yappy Hour. We are still building out auction item lists, but we know that one of them is a certificate to become Pet CPR and First Aid certified. This item has an $80 value. We are working on more items for our auction and will update here and on Facebook when we have more. Cross your fingers we can get a certificate to the spa next door to The Daily Brew.

We are looking forward to having Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles at the event again. They can share the details of their services to anyone who attends and even set you up with an appointment (no medical work at our event). We are also looking forward to inviting a few vendors to the event who have pet related items. These include artists with pet/animal art pieces and more. If you have pet or animal related items or services with your business please contact us if you would like to participate.

We will see you Saturday September 23 from 6pm to 9pm at The Daily Brew Coffee Bar. We are looking forward to having a great night.

Help us reach our goal

The Montebello Pet Fair formed out of a need to reduce the number of animals who enter our area shelter. In 2016 14,459 dogs and cats entered the shelter. Of the dogs that entered, 91% left the shelter alive. Of the cats that entered, 53% left the shelter alive. While the cat live release rate could use some more direct work on the shelter’s part, one thing that we can focus on in the public is to decrease the number of animals who entered in the first place. 14,459 animals.

We believe that educating people on proper ways to care for their pet will bring a shift to how people view animals in our area. It won’t be an instant shift, but we can’t just sit by and hope for the best. We are committed to having our fair be a place where people make new choices that will save the lives of animals. And you can help.

In this first picture you can see our estimated cost to pay for the fair. We have received many quotes from several businesses so we think we’ve found the lowest prices in the area. We are open to suggestions for lower costs, too.

meta-chart (1)

Our fundraising goal is $3,000. We have $1,655 left to raise.

Here is how you can help.

Financial Donations

We are accepting financial donations at our YouCaring fundraising page. To donate to support the 2017 Montebello Pet Fair go to:

https://www.youcaring.com/montebellopetfair-898496

If you would like to donate via check or in person, please contact us at [email protected] and we can schedule a pick up or give you an address to send the check to. We also have the option of Venmo if you use that.

(Please note that we are not a 501c3. If your giving is dependent on donating to a 501c3 there are options to help reduce the cost of the spay/neuter surgeries that will happen at the fair. Please contact us at [email protected] so we can connect you with our spay/neuter clinic nonprofit.)

Sponsoring

If you have a business and you would like to sponsor the event, please check out our Sponsoring Opportunities page to see the details of what your return on investment will include. Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in being a business sponsor.

Donating Supplies

Some of our funding goes toward equipment and supplies. If you would like to donate and or loan the fair equipment or supplies please look over the list below and let us know what you would like to donate. Every donor will be thanked and those who have donated or loaned a large piece of equipment will be noted as one of our horse level sponsors. Contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in donating an item listed below.

  • Generator
  • Sound system
  • 600+ feet of thin rope
  • 50 pet bowls
  • Crayons for used by children attending the fair. Possibly 30 boxes.
  • Cases of water/snacks for volunteers

Thank you for helping us reach our goal. The more people we can reach, the more we can make a difference in the thousands of animals who enter the shelter ever year. Let’s make a change in the lives of animals in Los Angeles County.

Yappy Hour August 19, 2017

Our second Yappy Hour of the year is shaping up to be a really great time. We ask that everyone who attends bring a monetary donation to give during your time at Yappy Hour. You choose the amount but we recommend between $5 and $20. If you would like to give $50 or more we will speak with you about sponsoring the fair. All proceeds are going to pay for the 2017 Montebello Pet Fair.

Our entertainment for the evening is Patrick Carrico and Kassidy Heal. Patrick was our musical guest in July and we are grateful he is back again this month. He and Kassidy have performed together before. On August 19 they will do their own sets and probably do some music together, too. Can’t wait to hear what they have for us.

Keeping The Culture Alive (KTCA) artists will be attending Yappy Hour. Ariel Torres will be taking commissions for watercolor paintings of your pet. Randy from Clasek Art will have his cat artwork for sale as well (Yes, cat people are welcome at this event.). KTCA’s 4th Annual Artfest will be happening Saturday September 16 from 12pm to 6pm at Montebello City Park. We are glad to have them participating in Yappy Hour. If you are a local artist and would like to participate in the Artfest be sure to contact KTCA or come to Yappy Hour on the 19th to sign up.

We are glad to have Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles (SNPLA) attending Yappy Hour again. SNPLA has been a part of the Montebello Pet Fair since our first year. We are grateful for their participation in the fair and Yappy Hour, but we are most grateful for what they do for the animals in Los Angeles County. Thousands of animals are vaccinated, given health checkups, or spayed/neutered by this organization. Thank you SNPLA for all you do.

Laura’s Goodies is back again this month giving out samples of her dog treats and also selling them. Be sure to stop by her table. You can also order a cake for your dog’s birthday or gotcha day. She also makes human treats.

Montebello Youth Leadership Club will be collecting school supplies at Yappy Hour. Bring things like backpack, notebooks, pencils, pens, glue sticks, folders, paper, or anything else that students might need. All supplies will be given to Montebello schools and students.

See you Saturday August 19 at The Daily Brew Coffee Bar. It is going to be a great night.

First Yappy Hour of the year

Yappy Hour on Saturday July 22 was a great success. We had several people stop by throughout the two hours of the event. 4 dogs stopped by, too!

We were pleased to have Patrick Carrico (like Jericho) perform at Yappy Hour. He’s got a country feel with a unique sound that is his own. He played for two sets with a break in between.

Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles attended Yappy Hour, too. They had a table set up outside to give people information about their service. People could also sign up their pets for any medical procedures they were needing (spay/neuter, checkups, etc). They were even taking volunteers to help at their kitten nursery (we saw at least 1 person signed up to help).

20292674_1961502234125726_2357825606315496244_n

We were happy to have Laura’s Goodies attend the event, too. Laura attended our Yappy Hour last year, as well as last year’s pet fair. Her treats are a hit with all the dogs.

20229000_1961523357456947_4211988121807788744_n

We had a photo booth at Yappy Hour, too. It has homemade props on sticks as well as animal ears. Here are three of our planning committee members enjoying the photo booth.

We organized the Yappy Hour for a few reasons. We wanted area dog owners to have a chance to socialize with other dogs owners (and dog lovers) in the area. You do not need to have or bring a dog to attend this event.

Another reason is we wanted to start a monthly meeting where pet owners can learn something about animal care. That is why we invited SNPLA to attend. In the future we plan to have other guests come and share some wisdom about pet care, either from the mic or at a table like SNPLA did at this last event.

20233086_1961527297456553_1545787274562487581_o

The last reason we organized Yappy Hour is to raise funds for the 2017 Montebello Pet Fair. Thanks to the support of our guests, Patrick Carrico, and The Daily Brew, we raised $54. Thank you so much.

We have decided to continue having Yappy Hour. The goal is to have it around once a month. The next Yappy Hour is Saturday August 19 from 6pm to 9pm at The Daily Brew Coffee Bar (137 N Montebello Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640). Our special musical guests are being put together and we will have more details soon.

Yappy Hour – July 22, 2017

Last year we had a lot of fun at our Yappy Hour fundraiser so we decided to do another one this year. The date is Saturday July 22, 2017 from 3pm to 5pm at The Daily Brew Coffee Bar (137 N Montebello Blvd, Montebello, CA 90640).

We are excited to have Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles attending to share information about the services they offer and also general information for pet owners. They will also be scheduling appointments for any cat or dog owner whose pet needs vaccines or spay/neuter surgery (they will not be providing services at the event, only scheduling).

We are happy to announce our musical entertainment for the evening. Patrick Carrico is our musician for the evening. “His music has been called everything from “California country” to rockabilly to blues but with his down-home, genuine lyrics, heartfelt melodies and golden tones, his songs have the power to just make you feel damn good and bring you back to a time when things were wonderful. He seems to fit no particular genre, but rest assured, Patrick Carrico’s brand of noise-making is for anyone who can appreciate a catchy tune with a heart of gold.” We look forward to having him perform at the Yappy Hour. Check him out at his website: http://www.patrickcarrico.com/

Come enjoy the photo booth. Listen to music. Talk to other pet owners. See what SNPLA has to offer. Drink an iced coffee and have some pastries.

For dog owners who are bringing their dog(s).

  1. All dogs must be up to date on their vaccinations to attend.
  2. No female dogs in heat are allowed to attend.
  3. Please do not bring a dog that is known to not get along well with other dogs or people they do not know. If the dog could, they would thank you for not bringing them.
  4. Dogs must remain on leash the whole time. There is no enclosed place for the dogs to wander around. (One day we’ll figure out a place where we can do that, but until then leashes required.)
  5. The organizers of the Yappy Hour and the staff and owners of The Daily Brew reserve the right to send a dog home if it is not being safe around other dogs. This is for the safety of your dog and other people.
  6. Everyone with a dog will sign a hold harmless agreement.
  7. You can bring your dog inside while you order your drink/food so don’t worry if you’re nervous about leaving your dog outside alone.

Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles

We are pleased to announce that Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles will be having a vaccine clinic at the 2017 Montebello Pet Fair scheduled for Saturday November 4. For those who do not know about Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles, they are a 501c3 founded in 2007 (Happy Anniversary SNP LA!). Their first location opened in Pico Rivera on Slauson. They now have a location in San Pedro and Mission Hills, as well as a mobile unit that does weekly events in several locations. One of those locations will be our fair in November. They have spayed/neutered over 150,000 cats and dogs.

IMG_20161022_140912910
SNP LA’s vaccine clinic at the 2016 Montebello Pet Fair

SNP LA provides spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and other veterinary care at their 3 locations in Los Angeles County. At their mobile clinic their focus is vaccinations and wellness checks. There is a goal to have a mobile spay/neuter clinic, but until then they are doing a great job keeping dogs and cats healthy throughout Los Angeles County.

Here are SNP LA’s mission and vision statements:

“SNP LA’s mission is to substantially reduce animal shelter euthanasia and intake by providing high quality, low-cost spay, neuter and wellness services to underserved communities in the Los Angeles area.”

“Our vision is to ensure that spay, neuter and wellness services are affordable and accessible to all pets’ families in the Los Angeles area and to create an environment in which animal shelters no longer euthanize adoptable pets.”

Those are definitely a mission and vision we stand with.

We will share more details about the vaccine clinic closer to the day of the fair. They provide low cost vaccines, microchipping, nail trimming, flea meds, and deworming. They will also have information for those who want to have their pet spayed/neutered if they were not prepared to have the procedure done with Latino Alliance for Animal Care Foundation who is hosting a spay/neuter clinic at the fair.

We are happy to have Spay Neuter Project of Los Angeles participating in the 2017 Montebello Pet Fair. Thank you for what you do SNP LA!
